How to Keep Your Child’s Smile Strong

Posted .

Your child deserves a top-notch oral health and smile, right? Right. However, these goals are not automatic. Fortunately, you get to help your child grow into the smile they deserve by helping them each day. To help you help your child, Dr. Lee F. Peterson and our dental team have some recommendations for you.

First, encourage oral hygiene. It’s important for your child to brush their teeth twice a day, floss their smile once a day, and rinse their mouth daily. If they are too young to do these things, you can clean their smile for them. If your child is younger than 3 years old, they do not need toothpaste. When you clean their smile, use a small child’s toothbrush and try to be as positive as possible.

Second, monitor what your child eats. It’s best to limit sugar consumption because sugar creates cavities. You can also help your child by giving them tooth-healthy snacks regularly, like carrots, apples, and dairy products.

Third, consider protecting your child’s teeth with dental sealants. Dental sealants are beneficial for children who have permanent molars. Sealants can cover the molars and protect them from bacteria and plaque. This is helpful because oftentimes molars are tough to clean.
