Are you about to extract your wisdom teeth in Hanford, California? If so, then please remember that the recovery period is vital if you want to return to a strong and successful oral health. This means you need to take the recovery process seriously. If you don’t, your smile could be in grave danger. So, to help you properly heal following wisdom tooth extraction, our Lee F. Peterson DDS dental team encourages you to do the following things:

No. 1: Stop the bleeding as soon as possible. You can do this by placing a gauze pad over the affected area and gently biting down on it for 45 minutes. The pressure should help stop the bleeding. If the bleeding does not subside, feel free to repeat this process with a clean gauze pad.

No. 2: Ice the affected area with an ice pack. This will reduce the swelling in your face. Apply the pack for 10 minutes and then take it off for 20 minutes. Repeat this process as necessary.

No. 3: Take pain medications to help with the discomfort. Dentists and oral surgeons generally prescribe medications to the patients, so if that is the case for you, please take the pills as recommended. If not, you are more than welcome to take over-the-counter pain medications to help.

No. 4: When it comes to food, please stick to a liquid diet for the first 24 hours after surgery. You can eat shakes, Jell-O, yogurt, ice cream, and other types of liquid foods. After the first day, keep to a soft-foods diet for an additional three days.

No. 5: Continue brushing normally. However, during the first 24 hours after surgery, please avoid brushing the teeth that neighbor the affected area. You can begin brushing these teeth on the second day, but please be gentle as you do so.

If you have any questions about the recovery process, please call our office today at 559-584-8129 and talk to our caring dental team. We also encourage you to keep an eye out for any unusual signs while you are recovering. If you see anything odd, please schedule an appointment with your dentist, Dr. Lee F.
